Catastrophic Risk

The term ‘Global Catastrophic Risk’ refers to the possibility of causing significant harm to human well-being on a global scale. From volcanic eruptions to pandemic infections, nuclear accidents to global tyranny, uncontrolled scientific experiments to climate change, and cosmic disasters to economic collapse, these disasters can impact all of us. How can communication design be used to influence a change in human behaviour that will aid in managing the risks?

'Global Catastrophic Risk' is chosen to encourage students to approach the global problems of the present era with greater maturity, responsibility, and effectiveness. By the end of the semester, all these works will be showcased in the first instalment of Resilient Bodies – a collaboration between two modules, Drawing & Making and Studio – an exhibition in which ‘the making and the thinking’ come together.

Research summary

Superintelligence should be developed ethically, aligned with human morals and law.

At present, many scientists believe that although we are still in the stage of weak artificial intelligence, as long as the technology continues to develop, strong artificial intelligence and even super artificial intelligence will inevitably appear. This is only a matter of time as to when superintelligence will emerge.

When the intelligence of machines surpasses humans, we may not be able to understand and control our creations, and machines may turn object-oriented, which is fatal and catastrophic to humans. This is a question worth pondering for all mankind. Artificial intelligence can bring many risks. One of which is misaligned goals, where the final goal is met but the process of achieving the said goal is not what the programmers intended. Leading to unanticipated and undesirable results.

This question is not only related to technology but is essentially related to the nature of human beings and the future of human society. We are trying to spread awareness of risks brought by the emergence of superintelligence and subsequently, develop a precautions mindset.
